| Iron This traditional style is classic, and there are endless design options. Pros: Wrought-iron fencing is extremely durable and won’t dent or scratch easily. Very old wrought iron can be restored with hand scraping, wire brushing or sandblasting. Due to the nature of the material, there are almost endless style options, including custom designs. Cons: Iron is heavy and will rust and flake after many years if not well maintained. Maintenance: Moderate. Periodical applications of liquid wax or clear linseed oil are needed, and you should rinse it occasionally with soapy water. Rust can be combated using a commercial-grade rust remover and steel wool. Exterior paint should be applied every five years.
